Babassu Oil

Why we chose Babassu Oil...  It has many more skin-loving qualities than palm oil or coconut oil has. In Brazil the Babassu tree is known as ‘The tree of life’ because of its amazing properties.

Similarly to coconut oil it comes from the fruit of the palm, is solid at room temperature, melts on skin contact and contains the same vitamins and fatty acids. However, it does have some advantages over coconut oil such as it is lighter in consistency and its improved absorption rate into the skin and hair without leaving a greasy residue. In addition to its ability to deeply moisturise skin, Babassu oil is also anti-microbial, provides a good amount of vitamin E which aids in cell regeneration and is rich in lauric acid, the main component in Babassu oil which is naturally anti-inflammatory. It is also an excellent emollient oil when applied directly to the skin, producing a cooling effect and has been shown to form a protective, soothing coat with a velvety feel.

Babassu is virtually waste-free when produced properly as almost all of the parts of the nut can be used. The tree can be fruitful for 40 years or more and each year one tree can produce up to 2000 nuts.

Whole communities depend on the growth of this tree for their survival and by buying from these producers helps to stop deforestation in Brazil as this tree often gets cut down and cleared to make space to raise live stock because this offers a better profit to the private land owner.
